My Journey
What can a SAHM who homeschools her children, has a passion for teaching, and would like some extra income do? Of course, the perfect answer to that question is the ESL online teaching community to Chinese students in China.
Checking into this further led me to a well-known company that several of my friends were teaching with: VIPKid. Eagerly, I pursued this opportunity with gusto completing the interview process in a week followed by uploading all my documents and credentials.
I opened slots up immediately while taking all the new teacher workshops in 2 weeks! I wanted to learn all that I could. With an incentive goal in mind but only 2 weeks to prepare, I made the minimum 45 classes within that timeframe. I was hooked, these children were adorable, I was having a blast teaching, and all while my children are doing their morning routine.
Where does ZebraEnglish fit in??
One day I came across a Facebook post about the ZE opportunity and decided to apply to pick up a few extra slots not filling at VIPKid. ZebraEnglish was starting out with their one-on-one platform with their already existing students.
Interviewing with them was a breeze and I passed through it within a week's time, but bookings were not happening at that time. ZE told us to only open a few slots with them until they got up and running. This was May and I would get a booking here and there.
Then July came and the bookings picked up as the platform opened up to more ZE students. One by one students were requesting to be my regular students. By August, I had a good dilemma. I had to decide how to juggle 2 companies with fully booked schedules. Clearly one company outweighed the other.
Seeing the differences between the 2 platforms, I chose ZE to be my primary company. Relationships were being built across the Pacific from my home to theirs. I am passionate about ZebraEnglish and their students.
Due to the small group of onboarding teachers in this inaugural program, we had an awesome group that knew each other, learned together, weathered the growing pains, and encouraged one another.
ZE cares for us, listens to us, and implements changes to help us. In November of 2019, ZE was ready to open their platform to their almost half-million student base. They gave us a referral link to invite more teachers to onboard with us. In December, ZE invited me to participate in their Home-Based Mentor training. I completed that training in January and onboarded as a HBM ready to help other teachers and applicants.
Jump back to March 2019. Who would have thought this SAHM would have such an amazing journey by simply applying to teach Chinese students English. I am very thankful for all that have encouraged me along the way and believed in me. This story is not mine alone but belongs to many and can become yours as well.
